WWE Summerslam Recap

I’ve said it on this blog many of times that nothing in wrestling really excites me anymore but last night may have been the exception to what I’ve been saying. Summerslam 2009 was an exceptionally solid PPV which kept you going from the opening bell until the return of the Undertaker at the end. The first match of the evening was for the Intercontinental Championship between Rey Mysterio and Dolph Ziggler. It was a fast pace back and forth match that saw Rey keep his title. I do tip my hat to Dolph though because he had one hell of a match. He’ll eventually get the title.

Up next was MVP vs. Jack Swagger which was a solid match between two of biggest up and coming stars on Monday Night. Both showed off their skills but in the end MVP won the match. It was a good match between two totally different cultures and styles.

It was then time…time for Cryme Tyme to take on the Unified Tag Team Champions in Big Show and Chris Jericho. Cryme Tyme really proved that they could hang with the best in the business. I thought the match was excellent but in the end Show and Jericho retained their titles.

Next up was Kane taking on the Great Khali. Personally I hate matches like these but it was better then the usual. Kane got the victory and makes me wonder if the feud is over. For our sake I hope it is.

I don’t about you but I was ready. I was ready but I wasn’t prepared for one of the most spectacular returns in pro wrestling history. You had to watch it to appreciate. The return of DX was simply electrifying in ways I didn’t think were possible. The match itself was totally what I expected and more. I said a week or so ago that people would remember the night Rhodes/Dibiase fought DX because they would have the match of their lives. They hung in there with two legends in Shawn Michaels and Triple H. The match was great and DX got the victory.

Up next was the shortest title match in history between Christian and William Regal. I think it last six seconds. What a slap in the face to two great wrestlers. It seems like ECW is the joke of all the PPV’s or they are not getting the credit they deserve. I can tell you this, since ECW has been officially apart of the WWE I have only enjoyed two of their championship matches. There was the night CM Punk defeated John Morrison in 2007 on TV. The other match was recently between Christian against Tommy Dreamer in an Extreme Rules match. That was also on TV. The only thing I liked about this match is Regals new alliance with Ezekiel Jackson and Vladimir Kozloff. It’s kind of interesting actually. Anyways nothing exciting about this match

I’ve seen a lot of great WWE Title matches but I’ve never seen anything more crazy then I did last night. Orton got himself got DQ’d then the match got restarted. Orton then got himself counted out then again the match got restarted. Orton got the pin with his feet on the ropes. Another referee came out and for the third time the match got restarted. Cena looked like he had the victory then a fan came in and messed things up. Orton eventually gave Cena the RKO and kept his title.

A lot of people knew the outcome of this next with Jeff Hardy and CM Punk. It was Tables, Ladders and Chairs and it was one of the most brutal and exciting matches I’ve ever seen. Both men abused their bodies in ways you shouldn’t. In the end, CM Punk ousted Jeff Hardy to become the new World Heavyweight Champion. As Punk was celebrating the lights went out and when they came back on the Undertaker was lying in the ring in Jeff Hardy’s spot. The Undertaker choke slammed the new champ and left him lying as Summerslam ended.

I am not saying it was the greatest PPV of all time but it was very solid. DX’s entrance stole the show, Ziggler/Mysterio was great and so was the TLC match. I would definitely rate it 7.5/10. A lot of people were buzzing after the PPV and said it was the best PPV they have seen out of WWE in a long time. I would have to agree. I am looking forward to the fallout from all three brands this week on TV. It should be interesting. If you didn’t watch it you missed out but you can always but it on DVD. Well those are my thoughts. Hope you all enjoyed a good PPV.
