Remembering Ernie Harwell

As I was driving home last night, I learned of one of baseball’s truest legends had passed away. Ernie Harwell was the voice of the Tigers for 42 years and even as a child I remember him so much. I remember growing up in Grand Rapids in the summers when it ever was nice out we had to be outside and when the Tigers were playing we would turn on the radio and listen to Ernie Harwell call the Tigers.

Ernie spent some time with other teams that include Brooklyn Dodgers (1948-49), New York Giants (1950-53), Baltimore Orioles (1954-59) and California Angels (1992). Then there was the Tigers who he spent many years from 1960 to 2002. Ernie had many accomplishments in career including:

-19 time Michigan Sportscaster of the Year
-Michigan Sports Hall of Fame
-Radio Hall of Fame
-Baseball Hall of Fame, Ford C. Frick Award (1981)
-Georgia Sports Hall of Fame (2008)

Ernie also had a few cameos in movies and has appeared in many baseball documentaries. There is a lot of cool things about Ernie Harwell like how he use to read a biblical verse at the start of every season. He is also the first and only broadcaster to ever be apart of a trade for a player, something that is unlikely to ever happen again.

Ernie Harwell will be missed by every one in baseball. After watching tribute videos, and hearing what people had to say Ernie was just as great of a man as he was a broadcaster. I will never forget the summers I spent listening to your voice. God Bless you Ernie, you will never be forgotten.
