Three hit for the Cycle in 1 Week
It’s definitely been an interesting week in baseball but what made it fun is that three players hit for the cycle in a 7 day week. I believe it’s happen two times in the history of major league baseball and it happen in 1885 and 1970. For those of you who don’t what the cycle is, it’s when a play hits a single, a double, a triple and a home run in the same game. It does not have to be in that order. However if it’s in that order it is called natural cycle. Only fourteen men have ever done that. Anyways here is the list from 1885 and 1970. (baseball-reference.com)
June 12, 1885 Dave Orr New York (AA)
June 13, 1885 George Wood Detroit
June 16, 1885 Henry Larkin Philadelphia (AA)
July 2, 1970 Tony Horton Cleveland
July 6, 1970 Tommie Agee New York (NL)
July 8, 1970 Jim Ray Hart San Francisco
Well this week three men hit for the cycle and the names kind of took me by surprise because they are not known for being superstars. Here is who hit for the Cycle this week
April 13, 2009 Orlando Hudson Los Angeles (NL)
April 15, 2009 Ian Kinsler Texas
April 17, 2009 Jason Kubel Minnesota
There are only three major league teams that have not had a player hit for the cycle and those are the San Diego Padres, Florida Marlins and Tampa Bay Rays. Also no player has ever hit for the cycle in a post-season game. A cycle is fun to watch but Kubel’s was the funnest to watch this week because he hit a Grand Slam to get the cycle and win the game for his team. Congrats to all three guys who hit for the cycle, and hopefully their will be more to come this year.
