Results, Review, Recap of WWE Summerslam 2016

Tonight was the annual summer event for the WWE. It’s the hottest party of the summer and it took place with one of the hottest crowds anytime WWE goes there. After watching NXT TakeOver I knew the main roster had to raise the bar. I think the overall card looked impressive and I was hoping to see some surprises. Before I get into all that here are the results of Summerslam:
-Pre-Show: The Uso’s/American Alpha/Mojo Rawley & Zack Ryder defeated Breezango/The VaudeVillains/The Ascension

-Pre-Show: Sami Zayn/Neville defeated The Dudley Boys
-Pre-Show: Sheamus defeated Cesaro in the 1st Match of the Best 7
-Chris Jericho/Kevin Owens defeated Enzo Amore/Big Cass
-Charlotte defeated Sasha Banks to win the WWE Women’s Title.
-The Miz defeated Apollo Crews to retain the Intercontinental Title.
-AJ Styles defeated John Cena
-The Club defeated The New Day by DQ, New Day keeps the WWE Tag Titles.
-Dean Ambrose defeated Dolph Ziggler to retain the WWE Title.
-Nikki Bella/Natalya/Alexa Bliss defeated Becky Lynch/Carmella/Naomi
-Finn Balor defeated Seth Rollins to become the first WWE Universal Champion
-Brock Lesnar defeated Randy Orton

The Pre-Show featured three matches. The tag team division does look great on Smackdown. It may not have the big name power that Raw does but they all have great technical ability. I really would like to see The Uso’s feud with American Alpha over the Smackdown Tag Titles. It only took until the last minute but two great talents in Neville and Sami Zayn got put on the show. Both men should have been on the mains show but I guess it’s better then not being on at all. I really wish Cesaro and Sheamus would have been on the main show. Both are still being underutilized and both should be in a bigger spotlight.

The show kicked off with the hometown boys of Enzo Amore and Big Cass. The crowd was on fire right away. I am really disappointed that Enzo and Cass didn’t win but it was a really great opening match. Owens and Jericho have really made themselves as a really fun formidable heel tag team. I don’t think we have seen the last of these two teams going at it. Speaking of fun rivalries, I love the rivalry between Sasha Banks and Charlotte. These two had an incredible match four weeks ago  I don’t know what was going on in the beginning of the match but it was not your typical women’s match. It looked very sloppy in which Sasha looked like she was legitimately hurt. This match got really aggressive after the top rope botch. I could not believe that they took the title off of Sasha after four weeks. I really hope Sasha Banks is okay and not seriously hurt.

One title match that was very disappointing was The Miz vs. Apollo Crews. That is not what a Intercontinental Title match is all about. It was short, not epic and not a classic. I don’t know who booked the match or where creative was going with this match but it was uneventful. We went from disappointment to an absolute wonderful match. Styles and Cena had two great encounters prior to this match and I didn’t expect any less. This match was better then their Money in the Bank match by far. I cannot believe what I witnessed between both Styles and Cena. I am really curious to see what happens with Cena after he left his armbands in the ring.

AJ Styles two friends Gallows and Anderson followed that incredible match chasing The New Day for the tag titles.Jon Stewart was out with the New Day and I am not what drugs he was on but he looked rough. The match was kind of rough with Stewart’s involvement and the fact that the match ended in DQ. I think they did this to add to the New Day’s title reign a little longer. It was an entertaining for the story but the story needs to get more serious. When it comes to serious title matches I thought Dean Ambrose and Dolph Ziggler had a great story coming into Summerslam. Everyone assumed that Dean Ambrose would keep the WWE World Title but even with that assumption they had a great match.

The Smackdown women had a chance to shine in a 6 women tag match which the return of. Nikki Bella. Nikki replaced the suspended Eva Marie and she looked great. The women of my Smackdown I think are being overlooked but tonight they showed what they are made of. Speaking of showing what they are made of I think the future showed what they are made of in Seth Rollins and Finn Balor. Tonight they competed to see who the first ever WWE Universal Champion. I must say the brand new Universal title looks very unoriginal and very hideous. Even though the belt is hideous the two men that fought for it are not. Both men are going to be around the title scene for a long time. Congratulation to Finn Balor for a hell of an accomplishment.

When it comes to belts I am so glad the United States belt is not as hideous as the Universal Championship. Reigns and Rusev had a hell of a match six days prior to tonight but tonight we didn’t get much of a match. In fact the match never took place. It was an all around beat down. In terms of beat downs, no one beats down people better then Brock Lesnar. The Main Event was 14 years in the making. Randy Orton and Brock Lesnar is the dream match that fans have wanted for a long time. I had a feeling it was going to by physical. There was nothing fancy and nothing athletic about this match. However it was one hell of a fight until they stopped the match. Orton got busted open, Shane got an F5.

Summerslam had some great action and great storytelling but there was somethings I really questioned a few title matches. I really think Sasha, The Club and Apollo Crews should have walked out with titles and got some momentum. I will give Summerslam a solid 7 out of 10 because the Main Event was not good as it should have been and there was nothing of shock value.
