Recap and Review of WWE Money in the Bank 2020
Tonight was the annual Money in the Bank Pay-Per-View where the men and women of WWE climb the ladder to at a chance for a WWE Championship Match. This year because of the circumstances the Money in the Bank Ladder Matches had a brand new twist. With this new twist of fight at WWE Headquarters, I was intrigued by how it was going to go. Money in the Bank has traditionally always been a big pay-per-view. Let’s find out if that tradition continues.
-Kickoff Show: Jeff Hardy defeated Cesaro
-The New Day defeated Lucha House Party, The Forgotten Son and Miz and Morrison to retain the Smackdown Tag Team Championships
-Bobby Lashley defeated R-Truth
-Bayley defeated Tamina to retain the Smackdown Women’s Championship
-Braun Strowman defeated Bray Wyatt to retain the WWE Universal Championship
-Drew McIntyre defeated Seth Rollins to retain the WWE Championship
-Asuka wins the Women’s Money in the Bank Briefcase and Otis wins the Men’s Money in the Bank Briefcase
I generally don’t discuss Kickoff Show matches but Jeff Hardy versus Cesaro is an incredible match on paper. This was a solid match for both men, but this has become a typical Cesaro situation. Make everyone else look good and not get rewarded for it. I really wish Cesaro would stop being complacent and demand more for his career. Cesaro has not won a meaningful singles match since August 2019 at NXT at NXT UK Takeover. I really hope something great happens for him soon. The opening match was the Fatal Four Way Tag Team Match for the Smackdown Tag Team Titles. The New Day successful defended them against three other teams, which makes have to ask the question: who’s next for the The New Day? There are no other teams on Smackdown right now so it makes it really hard for me to have any investment in the tag team division.
There was a lot of randomness going between R-Truth, MVP and Bobby Lashley. Truth and MVP were suppose to have a match with no buildup and then out came Lashley to defeat Truth for the win. Multiple dirtsheets have been reporting that Lashley is getting ready for a collision course with Brock Lesnar so they could explain why he is mowing down everyone in his path. One thing that hasn’t been random is the title reign of Bayley. The former hugger has been on an incredible run ever since she went to the dark side. I must say, it’s great to see Tamina getting some in time to shine finally. She’s struggled with some personal things as well as injuries, so it’s been great to see her doing some meaningful. I hope she finds herself back into the title picture at some point, but I can see they’re headed towards Sasha versus Bayley for a big summertime feud.
The match I was most concerned about is Braun Strowman versus Bray Wyatt. My thought going into the match is that if Braun loses, he becomes a transitional champion. If Bray loses, his momentum gets derailed once again. This is the exact reason why Goldberg should have never beat Wyatt as The Fiend right before Wrestlemania. Braun defeated Bray after some really great mind games, but at least it was Bray and not The Fiend who lost against Strowman. I do think their story is very far from over. They have a great relationship and chemistry so I hope for more great storytelling from the both of them. Another person I was worried about being a transitional champion is Drew McIntyre. The ratings on Raw have not been the greatest and usually it’s the WWE Champion that gets punished for it. Fortunately, that was the case. Rollins and McIntyre had an incredible match. It was probably the best match of the night. I hope McIntyre to continues to get great opponents and builds his championship reign.
The Main Event was the Men’s and Women’s Money in the Bank Ladder Matches that took place at the same time. This match was absolutely incredible. The music, cameos and sound effects were completely on point. I wasn’t expecting a five star Ladder Match. I expected a lot of crazy entertainment and that’s what I got. Asuka and Otis who happen to be of the craziest and most entertaining stars ended up getting rewarded for it. I am very excited to see how Asuka and Otis move forward with their briefcases. I have to say though, outside of the wildness of the ladder matches the show was not that good. I have to give it a 6 out of 10. The only thing unpredictable was Otis winning the briefcase at the end. This show is going to get a lot of backlash so hopefully they put on a better show on June 14th at WWE Backlash.
